"April's Fool wins Tick Open"
what a turnout! it seemed like almost all the BCC members showed up for the Bernardsville Country Club's one and only golf tournament of the year, the Tick Open. held on Oct. 9th, it turned out to be a beautiful fresh day, warm and sunny with a nice breeze. the BCC course was also in fine shape, sporting short and fast greens, and the return of the hazard known as the "blue lagoon" (actually purple, i was told). 14 golfers and friends came to compete for the coveted silver BCC Cup, past champions, hungry challengers and some dreamers who only needed to see x-champ louie z. to be reminded that anything is possible. did somebody say fluke? the first qualifying round saw "dead eye" derek dominate the 1st group with 9 points and 2 birdies with his nemesis jeff d. grinding out 5 points, mike r., randy and pops auld could only muster 2 points each. 2nd group saw a tough tight battle between, a not on his A game defending champ, the groundskeeper, past champ and SVCC captain billy jo auld, mike w. all with 5 points, pete "the eagle" johnson with 4 and matt scoring 3. in the 3rd group tony d. edged out newcomer todd and old timer chris c. by one with 5 points while past champs jeff wood and louie z. could only manage 3 and 2 respectively. todd won closest to the pin contest at #4, 4'4". in the second qualifying round tony d. got the best of derek in the 1st group but both made enough points for a spot in the final, while mike w. with 10 points would have to sweat it out to see if he would make the cut. jeff d. and louie lead the 2nd group with 5 points but only dreilein had a chance. SVCC captain billy jo sadly didn't make the final but must be thanked for helping out with scoring duties. the 3rd group saw newcomer todd make 8 points securing his spot and watched the groundskeeper birdie Octopine's Revenge (83yds) twice but continued to hack his way around the BCC course for his spot in the final. he wasn't looking sharp. so there it was, derek and todd with 13 points, tony and the groundskeeper scoring 11 each. jeff d. and mike w. both had 10 and would play in a Cinderella Story Sudden Death that started and ended on #5 Octopine's Revenge with jeff d. winning with par. time was running out due to darkness and the final was started right away, finalists missing the BCC Bar-B-Q except for hot dogs and drinks brought out to the competitors by the rodeo clowns, nice. thanks to matt for working the grill. the final, 8 holes to decide the winner of the Tick Open and holder of the BCC Cup. there was derek, best golfer not to have won a BCC championship, in prime form. wide eyed todd, having just driven from california, without a clue, but playing well. 'touchdown" tony, second best player not to have won a championship, ready to make his best effort yet. there was the ever more confident jeff d. making another appearance in a championship round, turning that into a habit. and then there was our would-be champ, three sheets to the wind, who would somehow birdie #3 Sight Unseen (113yds), #4 Octopine (103yds) and #7 Big Roundup (129yds)! amazingly winning the Tick Open and retaining the silver BCC cup. go figure! the BCC would like to thank you all for making this the enjoyable day it was."don''t drink and drive, don't even putt", dean martin.
