The Tick Open Of 2009

the silver BCC Cup remains @ home...with the Bernardsville Country Club’s golfing season coming to an end, the short notice invite to the 15th annual BCC Tick Open golf tournament was sent out along with the BCC Halloween invite, as luck would have it, that seems to have lead to a short list of competitors arriving on oct.18 to compete at the beautiful eight hole golf course against the defending golf champion, holder of the silver BCC Cup and their host, me. the BCC groundskeeper.the weather? at noon when derek and i played a practice round it was wet, cold and windy. by the time “foul weather” jeff dreitlein, pete “the eagle” johnson, doctor joe and monika “the masher” were all present and accounted for, the rain had stopped but the wind had gotten a bit stronger, tough conditions. the tournament began with a well dressed monika “the masher” in a fine cashmere sweater and scarf hitting a well struck nine wood, pushed a little right, only to announce "THAT"S IT!" and “IT”S TOO COLD!”, as she walked off the course, jumped in the car and went to short hills mall. she was then declared the BCC ladies champion. long live the queen!then there was five. the first round qualifier continued, four hoops clockwise and four hoops counter clockwise, pars and birdies were made, and on the 8th fairway i thought, well, we all qualified! so after completing the round i suggested two options and put it to a vote. an eight hoop final or , for the first time ever, a sixteen hoop marathon final. after some of mom’s warm bean soup and sandwiches were enjoyed in the BCC clubhouse, the decision was made, “16”! ahhh, the sweet sixteen.it took fifteen. two points to win the hoop and one for the tie, after four hoops they all had points, G-3pts with a birdie at #1 OK Corral, 95yds, D-1pts, J-2pts, P-2pts with a tap-in birdie at the no.1 handicap hoop #4 Octopine,103yds, and off course, doctor joe with a scotch in his hand watching the giants game in the warm clubhouse. on the back four hoops of the first eight, it looked like derek, the only Steeple View Country Club representative, was being ganged up on, revenge for the BCC/SVCC Inter-club defeat no doubt. the score was, D-3pts, P-5pts with J-5pts and G-7 after they shared points with a birdie on #8 Barn’s Window, 111yds, much to jeff's dismay.the second eight hoops of the final began with jeff making a tap-in birdie at the first and finding himself tied for the lead (actually i'm not sure he even knew it). then it was derek's turn, four points in the next three hoops, the score: G-9pts, J-7pts, D-7pts and P-5pts. the back four hoops left, anybody's championship! well? almost. the cold days competition was ended after i, the groundskeeper, birdied #6 Pine’s Gauntlet, 109yds and then backed it up with the clincher, another birdie at #7 Big Roundup, 129yds. glorious day indeed. and jeff D. tied for second! we even saw blue skies by the end. the point totals after 15 hoops were: G-14pts, J-7pts, D-7pts and P-6pts. i’d like to thank the members for making it the great day it was. how about that hat?
