BCC Halloween Blackout Bash
very very scary...b-ville- we always have come to expect the unexpected at Bernardsville Country Club, but after days of preparation on the “BCC Halloween Bash”, and with rain threatening to spoil our planned outdoor activities, on saturday, october 31 2009, 5pm eastern standard time, the power went out! BCC members and guests began arriving around sundown. arriving at the “BCC Clubhouse”, high in the hills of bernardsville, a clubhouse lit only by a roaring fireplace and candles. guests having to be told it wasn’t just a scary look we were going for. we had music though, with power coming from a car, thanks to capt. sperry. and the party continued, another example of the resiliency of the club and it’s member’s. party on!at about 9:15pm, with all the costumed revealers in attendance and the event, in the dark and in full swing, people drinking, eating the pot luck foods brought by all, a flash photo was taken and suddenly, the power snapped back on. “yea!”, said the party. “oh my.”, said a slightly tipsy BCC groundskeeper, realizing he now had a lot to do. yes! the P.T.PuppetShow! yes, ladies and gentlemen, all the regulars, “PT & Dino”, the “Magic Shoe”, “PT on the high wire”, “Project Genesis”, “rocky, the smoking raccoon”, “Simpsinatra”, plus a new act from germany, the “Dirty Dowels”, singing that old favorite,”Rawhide”. you just had to be there.next was the “BCC Scavenger Hunt”. although the ground was wet, the rain had stopped. teams were formed, maps and a list of tasks to be performed were handed out. and off they went, out into the dark, again. the “hunt” lead them to the “BCC Alter”, the “Bounty”, the BCC dart room, the “Elvis Room” disco, a creepy hole in the ground and finally to the “BCC Haunted Barn”. the winner was once again the team lead by dr. mark, the only straight person in the competition.the party finally moved up to the “BCC Clubhouse”, there they heard a set of music by the “Frozen Monkey Band”, while they partied the night away. what a great time. and it didn’t end. some members slept over, another fire was started, football was watched, food was eaten, golf was played, more fun was had. one of the best halloween bashes ever. the Bernardsville Country Club thanks it’s members and guests for making it the great party it was.

The Tick Open Of 2009
the silver BCC Cup remains @ home...with the Bernardsville Country Club’s golfing season coming to an end, the short notice invite to the 15th annual BCC Tick Open golf tournament was sent out along with the BCC Halloween invite, as luck would have it, that seems to have lead to a short list of competitors arriving on oct.18 to compete at the beautiful eight hole golf course against the defending golf champion, holder of the silver BCC Cup and their host, me. the BCC groundskeeper.the weather? at noon when derek and i played a practice round it was wet, cold and windy. by the time “foul weather” jeff dreitlein, pete “the eagle” johnson, doctor joe and monika “the masher” were all present and accounted for, the rain had stopped but the wind had gotten a bit stronger, tough conditions. the tournament began with a well dressed monika “the masher” in a fine cashmere sweater and scarf hitting a well struck nine wood, pushed a little right, only to announce "THAT"S IT!" and “IT”S TOO COLD!”, as she walked off the course, jumped in the car and went to short hills mall. she was then declared the BCC ladies champion. long live the queen!then there was five. the first round qualifier continued, four hoops clockwise and four hoops counter clockwise, pars and birdies were made, and on the 8th fairway i thought, well, we all qualified! so after completing the round i suggested two options and put it to a vote. an eight hoop final or , for the first time ever, a sixteen hoop marathon final. after some of mom’s warm bean soup and sandwiches were enjoyed in the BCC clubhouse, the decision was made, “16”! ahhh, the sweet sixteen.it took fifteen. two points to win the hoop and one for the tie, after four hoops they all had points, G-3pts with a birdie at #1 OK Corral, 95yds, D-1pts, J-2pts, P-2pts with a tap-in birdie at the no.1 handicap hoop #4 Octopine,103yds, and off course, doctor joe with a scotch in his hand watching the giants game in the warm clubhouse. on the back four hoops of the first eight, it looked like derek, the only Steeple View Country Club representative, was being ganged up on, revenge for the BCC/SVCC Inter-club defeat no doubt. the score was, D-3pts, P-5pts with J-5pts and G-7 after they shared points with a birdie on #8 Barn’s Window, 111yds, much to jeff's dismay.the second eight hoops of the final began with jeff making a tap-in birdie at the first and finding himself tied for the lead (actually i'm not sure he even knew it). then it was derek's turn, four points in the next three hoops, the score: G-9pts, J-7pts, D-7pts and P-5pts. the back four hoops left, anybody's championship! well? almost. the cold days competition was ended after i, the groundskeeper, birdied #6 Pine’s Gauntlet, 109yds and then backed it up with the clincher, another birdie at #7 Big Roundup, 129yds. glorious day indeed. and jeff D. tied for second! we even saw blue skies by the end. the point totals after 15 hoops were: G-14pts, J-7pts, D-7pts and P-6pts. i’d like to thank the members for making it the great day it was. how about that hat?

BCC Halloween Bash
short notice schedule updates!
Sunday, August 16, 2009
well, well. well.... no,
blue and yellow? 2:00pm? is it going to rain all day? were just some of the questions pondered in a down pour while SVCC & BCC members practiced prior to the start of the 3rd annual Inter-club Championship held at the Bernardsville Country Club on a day that had flash flood warnings in effect. and when the final component of this four on four battle arrived from his dangerous trip, through that same horrible weather (3:20pm to be exact) the rain began to dissipate and the anticipation began to grow. this event, which had been canceled the first time by (you guessed it) heavy rains and twice more postponed by scheduling difficulties, was finally going to happen
the BCC team of assistant capt. mike rosenberg., pete”the eagle”johnson, jeff dreitlein and capt. G were ready to wrestle away the Quantus Certaminus from the favored SVCC, their two time Inter-club championship team consisted of capt. billy jo auld, robert auld, tony d’anna and derek schultz. the first round best ball matches began the battle that would become the war of the first two rounds, a seesaw contest that pitted the SVCC power house team of billy jo and 2009 SVCC Steeplechase winner derek, against the BCC groundskeeper and jeff. a competition decided by inches, the best ball match was halved and the alternate shot match was won with a birdie on the final hole (#8 barns window 111yds) by the SVCC after the BCC attempt rolled through the hoop, by inches i might add. “jeff hit some great shots, kept us in it”, said G. on the other side, mike and pete were not having their best day against the strong team of tony and robert who were both playing well. well. behind the 8 ball. singles matches, down 6 to 2. jeff was thrown to the wolfs (derek) and lost, no surprise. pete surprised us with a win over robert. G won a high powered showdown over tony (w/ 6 birdies), no surprise. mike surprised us with his play and loss to billy jo. but the Steeple View Country Club team was ready, willing and able to defend it’s championship and once again retain the coveted Quantus Certaminus, no surprise. Derek wins Steeplechase!
the SVCC's sharp shooting derek schultz came out on top in the scoring festival of the final round of the "Steeplechase" at the Steeple View Country Club, a 9 under par group total that consisted of derek's eagle and eight birdies! wow! all a shocked aircast wearing BCC groundskeeper could say was, "one ace and three deuces beats four deuces".

a new season begins...
the start of another journey, another round. NJOY
........The ball and the clubface are one, been together before we've begun, like a song you've always sung, in the skin, the muscle and the skeleton.........The address, the backswing, the follow through, creating the path that the ball flew, interconnectedness, mind the glue, the ball, the target, the golf voodoo.......With a sound foundation, a proper grip, on the fairways or on a delicate chip, practice in time becomes craftsmenship, know the course and let it rip...............
