Happy Holidays from the BCC!!!!

"Octopine"

there's a tree, a tree, on the property, of the bernardsville country club. a tree, a tall tree, in front of me, respected but never loved. octopine, octopine, there goes a ball you'll never find, after the drop, one stroke behind. octopine, octopine, there goes a golf ball you'll never find, makes me shiver, shiver, shiver on the 4th and 5th tee.

.........BCC Halloween Bash!!!

it could have been a night like any other night, but it wasn’t. people could have been hungry and thirsty, but they weren’t. the night might not have been full of wonderful spirited fun, but it was. the BCC Halloween Bash was what it was intended to be, a ball.it was a tardy party that caught up fast. after the scrumptious pot luck feast the costumed guests, which included simpsinatra’s mom and costume contest winner, “i dream of jeanie” michele*, sat down and enjoyed an all new P.T.PuppetShow. they were soon shocked to find out P.T. had been kidnapped by the P.L.O. (the puppet liberation organization). Dino declared, “the show must go on!”and it did! Simpsinatra, Rocky the smoking raccoon, P.T.’s cousin’s Harry & Larry, the Magic Shoe from istanbul, all performed valiantly under such circumstances. then that phone call from the kidnappers, that lead the audience to the tape recorder in the hat, which demanded one dollar from every member and guest be put into the brown paper bag on the stage.
(hey, didn’t that voice on the tape sound like Dino?) could the audience see through the smoke screen? could they help P.T.? did they even know he was missing? who knows? predictably, the explosive act Project Genesis blew up, and the next thing you know P.T. was back for the finale. wow, what a show! then it was the BCC’s second annual Scavenger Hunt, organized by the S.H. committee headed by louie along with stacy and the groundskeeper, that had members and guests running all over the beautiful Bernardsville Country Club grounds on a cool, star filled night.
two hours later, ending up in the barn, there were some winners, but there were no losers, a great night was had by all. the Frozen Monkey Band was ready for act three but, alas, there was no more time (what time is dusk?). and there it is, the doors close on another BCC season, our 13th, wow. i’d like to thank our membership and guests and those of our sister club, the SVCC, for making this the special year that it was and wishing you all, happy holiday’s, merry christmas and a very happy new year.

Warrenbrook Championship

was bobby jones seen on #17?

it took a while but the BCC Groundskeeper finally did it! he’s got the monkey off his back, after many years of trying, he is the new 2007 Warrenbrook Champion! on Oct. 6th he shot a 79 on the challenging 6372 yard golf course, leaving himself in 2nd place, down by a stroke. day two saw an impressive showing by the 5 handicapper, as he started out strong, overcame some obstacles with lessons learned from the past and finished solid playing the last 10 holes in even par, finishing with a 5 over par 76 and winning the championship by 7 strokes. one happy man, but what happened on #17? did someone see the ghost of bobby jones? you’ll have to ask BCC members louie and stacy who came to show their support and then celebrated with the new champ. golf golf golf golf, drink it up!

the BCC Tick Open

a long time coming...

OMG!!! september 23rd, 2007. what a day it was. the beautiful weather, a beautiful Bernardsville Country Club course, the members gathering from near and far, returning to see what are now old friends, a day to get away and party, to compete in a golf tournament for the BCC Cup, returning to where it all started, the Tick Open. the stage was set, the 14 actors were in attendance, the drama was to begin. the first act was the revelation of the evolution, the ever improving golfers welcomed year after year by an ever more difficult BCC course.

a tee was spun to choose the three foursomes in the 1st round qualifier, and off they went, two points for the win, one for the tie. four players introduced themselves to the field with eight points each, the SVCC’s derek schulz and the BCC groundskeeper battled it out in one group, as the SVCC’s capt. billy jo and matt “rodeo clown” pichel came out of the other two. billy jo winning the Octopine Trophy for closest to the pin with a 4 foot 4 inch shot @ #4.

act two, the seeded 2nd round qualifier saw these same players continue their fine play but the round was highlighted by a spirited charge made by the SVCC’s tony “TD” d’anna, who was in a threesome the BCC groundskeeper and BCC x-champ mike rosenberg. the groundskeeper, in his second tough qualifier of the day, went toe to toe with this range tuned machine, going down early and then scrambling for points, making a birdie on #8 and still losing the match within a match, 7 points to 8. and there it was, the final round qualifiers were matt, with 16 points, derek and the groundskeeper with 15, billy jo 14 and tony with 13.

the players then enjoyed a bountiful bar-b-que on the BCC Patio, a feast brought by all, delicious and delightful. ta ta ta taaaa!!! act three, the championship round! @ #1 O.K. Corral (95yds) the groundskeeper started by going pin hunting, landing 2 feet away from the hoop, but this was a talented group, and billy jo knocked in a 15 foot chip to halve the hoop, 1 point each. @ #2 One Bad Apple (127 yds) the hoop was halved by tony and the groundskeeper with a par. @ #3 Sight Unseen (113yds) it was the groundskeeper again, a birdie again, 2 more points. @ #4 Octopine (103yds) the tide turned, with matt, billy and tony making par and taking away the groundskeeper’s momentum. @ the turn it was the groundskeeper with 4, billy jo and tony 2, matt 1 and then derek, mysteriously scoreless.

@#5 Octopine’s Revenge (83yds) matt and billy made fine tee shots, each making birdie. @ #6 Pine’s Gauntlet (109yds) matt’s run continued with another birdie, this time a long chip in front the of groundskeeper who had but a tap-in par. @#7 Big Roundup (129 yds) all the contenders made par, shared the points and set us up for one of the most exciting championship rounds in BCC history. matt and G with 5, billy jo 4, tony 3. @ #8 Barn’s Window (111yds) matt was first and hit a solid shot but short and right. a fired up groundskeeper then fired his ball long, long and out of play, shocked, he stepped aside, his fate now in the hands of his competitors. billy jo swung and his ball landed a good 15 yards short and right, left with a tricky and fast chip downhill, left to right. tony and derek were last to tee off, but definitely not least, each nailing their shots to about 3 feet, wow.

matt was first, pushing his left handed chip to the left and long. as the gallery mulled over all the scoring possibilities, billy jo made his chip, a bounce and then the click of the ball hitting the pin, followed by the roar of the gallery and players, a birdie! but it’s not over yet! if tony or derek put one of their 3 foot chips for birdie into the hoop, there would be a 3-way tie and a sudden death playoff. the gallery watched in silence and awe as one chip went long and then next one fell short. ladies and gentlemen, we have a new champion, the title of best player to not have won a championship is no more, the monkey is off his back, the 2007 TIck Open Champion is the Steeple View Country Club’s greenskeeper and captain, billy jo auld. congratulations to him and thanks to all your BCC member’s for making it the great event that it was.

the 2007 SVCC Steeplechase!

BCC NEWS - full story available @ http://www.steepleviewcc.blogspot.com/

page one: the BCC's mike rosenberg makes an impressive showing at the SVCC's steeplechase open on aug. 19th, he started by teaching the BCC groundskeeper a thing or two in the first round, almost getting a hoop in one at #2 (buck 95yds), he continued his mastery of the short game in the second round and won the second slot in the championship round. in that, he came out strong and in the end had his chances to win the Fawkirk, finishing in second, so close.

page two: pete "the eagle" johnson does it again! this time at #7 (pheasant 104 yds) the number one handicapped hoop at the SVCC. what's in a name?

page three: what happened to the BCC groundskeeper? "i don't know?" but the BCC-SVCC rivalry is now a reality, sides were drawn when it came to the championship round, it was the Bernardsville boys versus the Steeple View crew. mike rosenberg with an eagle for his caddie, and the BCC's captain with jef dreitlein spotting and cheering him on. and then a rookie stole it from both sides, go figure.

page four: a word about billy jo, the SVCC's greenskeeper. what an effort, even after being hospitalized by hornet stinks the day before while working on the course, he still managed to stage a great golf tournament and all that that entails, the golf course, with all it's revisions, the food, along with club house staff, all done with a touch of class. thank you.

page five: the Tick Open, sun. sept. 23, 2007. starts at noon...

GROUNDSKEEPER'S REVENGE!!!

on a fine morning in july, just over a month after the BCC lost to the SVCC in the first inter-club competition, the BCC groundskeeper met the SVCC’s big three, capt. billy jo, derek and touchdown tony at the Quail Brook GC in somerset county for an exhibition match. well, the groundskeeper took them down, hitting from the back tees, he hit 10 of 14 fairways, was on the green in regulation 12 times, knocking in 2 birdies and missing more than a couple others, scoring a sweet 2 over par 73. “i was on, and i was going for it”. the champion SVCC team was humbled by the performance and heard the message, loud and clear, this Fawkirk Cup holder is not about to give it up! he’s ready for the SVCC Steeplechase on august 19, 2007, he’ll be no pushover at the BCC Tick Open in september, when the club continues the tradition after taking a year off, and he’s also determined to defeat the SVCC team next year to hold the Quantus Certminus.

The Quantus Certaminus Trophy

Quantus Certaminus sitting upon a gift bucket of SVCC fairway.

SVCC vs. BCC

at the BCC for the first inter-club competition, from left to right: derek, robert, tony, capt. billy jo and capt. G, mike, jeff, pete

IT'S COOL...

the groundskeeper made the challenge, the greenskeeper accepted it, and the Bernardsville Country Club hosted it. the first BCC/SVCC Inter-club Championship was played on June 14th, 2007. a team of four from the Steeple View Country Club, captained by greenskeeper billy jo, against four members of the Bernardsville Country Club, battling for the Quantus Certaminus Trophy.
due to scheduling difficulties, competitors gathered on a thursday afternoon to compete in a three round match play competition. the first round being a two man team best ball scramble, the second, a two man team alternate shot format, and then four singles matches, eight matches in all (two points for a win, one for a tie) to be played on the eight hoops of the BCC.

the BCC presented it’s pairings and the SVCC made it’s match choices. the best ball matches paired up the groundskeeper, BCC & SVCC champ, with jef “scully” dreitlein, aka, “bad guys” against past SVCC champ derek schultz and billy jo (best player not to have won a championship) auld, also past BCC champ mike rosenberg and pete “the eagle” johnson, aka, “goods guys” against tony “TD” d’anna and robert “pops” auld.
the competition began with two birdies from the first group, halving #1 O.K. Corral (95yds). after two pars at #2 One Bad Apple (127yds), jef and the BCC captain went on a birdie run at #3 sight Unseen (113yds), #4 Octopine (103yds) and a third at the fifth hoop (clockwise #1 again). although captain billy jo made a amazing desperation birdie chip on the sixth, it was too little, too late and they lost 3 & 1. in the second match, mike and pete parred their way to a 3 & 2 victory. the BCC was up four points to zero and the BCC’s spirits were high, very very high.
the counter clockwise second round alternate shot pairings were the same but the outcome was not. after going down one at the first (#5 Octopine’s Revenge, 83yds), the BCC “bad guys” were one up at the seventh (#7 Big Roundup, 129yds), when captain billy jo once again made a long birdie chip to tie the match, turn the momentum, and won on the last hoop #8 Barn’s Window (111yds), when the BCC team was unable to make par. in the other match, the BCC “good guys”, mike and pete were up one until tony and robert birdied the fifth, #5. parred #6 Pines Gauntlet (109yds) and #7, and won 2 & 1.
the competition was all even, four singles matches left to decide who was more able on this day, nine points were needed by the SVCC to take the coveted Quantus Certaminus Trophy home with them. the singles matches paired up the two captain’s, then mike vs. tony, pete “the eagle” johnson against derek and finally jef vs. robert, in that order. in the first match, the BCC groundskeeper might have found revenge for his second round loss to the SVCC greenskeeper, with two birdies and a 4 & 3 win, but tony defeated mike 3 & 2 while derek and robert both won 5 & 3 in their matches against pete and jef. the Steeple View Country Club team, in their matching outfits, were down but not out, they came back, they overcame a tough BCC course, an able BCC team and in the BCC groundskeeper’s own words, “a cold day in hell”.
